This is part of Microsoft’s July 2025 Patch Tuesday update addresses 130 vulnerabilities across its software ecosystem, including a critical zero-day vulnerability in SQL Server (CVE-2025-49719). Windows 11 Build 26100.4652 also adds taskbar enhancements with new icon resizing options, improves Narrator with a privacy-focused screen curtain feature, and introduces a PC-to-PC migration preview through the Windows Backup interface. It also resolves a graphics bug where the mouse cursor would become desynchronized after using Alt+Tab in fullscreen games.

The following two updates are now available for Windows 11 devices:

  • Windows 11, version 24H2: KB5062553 (OS Build 26100.4652)
  • Windows 11, version 23H2: KB5062552 (OS Build 22631.5624)

Windows 11 KB5062553 update

As part of the July 2025 Patch Tuesday update, the primary focus of Windows 11 KB5062553 is to make miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality.

The update introduces an option to adjust taskbar icon size. This setting can be adjusted in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.

Smaller Taskbar Icons

This update introduces a new PC-to-PC migration feature within the Windows Backup app. This allows transferring files and settings from an old PC to a new one over a local network using a PIN for authentication.

When sharing images through the Windows Share interface, there’s a new drop-down menu to compress images at various levels (Low, Medium, High) before sending, helping to reduce file size.

On Copilot+ PCs, users can now highlight text or images and send them directly to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for processing without needing to copy and paste. This feature is accessible via the Click to Do menu, triggered by a right-click or the Copilot key. This requires a Microsoft 365 license.

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the update expands the “Set default” functionality in the browser settings to include additional file and link types, complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The Narrator feature now includes a “Screen Curtain” mode, which blacks out the screen to hide sensitive content from others. This can be toggled on or off using the shortcut Caps Lock + Ctrl + C.

Voice Access now supports Simplified and Traditional Chinese and allows users to add custom words to the dictionary.

File Explorer now extracts .7z or .rar archives up to 10-15% faster, particularly when dealing with archives containing thousands of files.

The country or region selected during device setup is now displayed under Settings > Time & Language> Language & region.

The update resolves several issues, including the Alt+Tab keyboard shortcut causing resolution changes during gameplay, false Windows Firewall warnings, and improved Windows Search responsiveness.

  • Windows Search Performance: Improvements to Windows Search responsiveness, fixing slow load times and issues preventing typing in the search box.
  • Copilot Key Reliability: Improved the reliability of the Copilot key and resolved an issue preventing Copilot from restarting after use.
  • Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) Efficiency: Addresses an issue to maintain the efficiency of S2D.
  • Unused Language Pack Removal: Fixes an issue that prevented unused language packs and Feature on Demand packages from being fully removed, leading to unnecessary storage use.
  • Windows Hello for Business Certificates: Addresses an issue preventing the automatic renewal of expiring certificates.
  • Windows Firewall Warnings: Corrects false Windows Firewall warnings observed in Event Viewer.
  • Taskbar & Start Menu Fixes: Addresses issues where jump lists disappeared from the Start Menu and where the Start Menu was not starting after an update.
  • Windowing Issues: Fixes issues with app responsiveness and window resizing after Alt+Tab or sleep, and resolves crashes related to snapping.
  • Script Execution: Addresses slow script execution when running from older SMB shares.
Notification Sounds: Fixes an issue where notification sounds didn’t play for on-screen alerts, volume adjustments, and sign-in.
  • WIN + CTRL + Number Shortcut: Restores functionality for this keyboard shortcut, used to switch between multiple windows of the same app pinned to the taskbar.

While KB5062553 introduces many valuable enhancements, Microsoft has acknowledged a known issue tied to this update:

Blurry NOTO Fonts at 96 DPI: Users may notice that CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text appears blurry or unclear when using NOTO fonts at 96 DPI (100% scaling) in Chromium-based browsers like Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. This can impact readability and overall text clarity. As a temporary fix, increasing the display scaling to 125% or 150% can help improve how the text appears until a permanent solution is released.
