Stop the program that is causing the hang

If you experience Laptop hang issue when you are running certain programs that are too heavy, then it can be suspected that the program is the one causing Windows 10 to crash.

  • Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and select task manager,
  • Move to the process tab then Find the program that causes the laptop to hang
  • Right-click on the program then select End Task, Wait until the program closes

Check if there is an update on the program that has a bug

The laptop hangs, which makes the mouse unable to move and the keyboard not work at all, often because of a bug in the program that is running. Try to see if the laptop crashes when you are only using certain programs? If so, it can be assumed that the program is the source of the problem.

Some programs, especially those that are still early versions, usually have bugs that can cause various problems on the computer system. If you use a program from an unreliable source or the program is still in beta, it could be that the program still has bugs.

If the update is still not available then temporarily the solution you can do is to remove the program from your laptop.

Install the latest Windows updates

Bugs in Windows will usually cause problems when there is a trigger, such as clashing with certain applications or when you run one of the features built into Windows. Let’s check and install the latest windows updates that Microsoft regularly releases to improve system performance and fix recent bugs.

  • Press Windows key + X and select settings,
  • Go to update and security then hit the check for updates button,
  • This will check for the latest available updates, download and install them from the Microsoft server,
  • You only need to restart your Laptop to apply them, Once done check if your laptop function properly.

Run system file checker

A common reason for Windows to freeze up or reboot automatically during the Windows startup process is because one or more important Windows files are damaged or missing. Windows 10 has a feature called System File Checker or abbreviated as SFC. This feature serves to scan the system files to detect if there is an error there, if there is, SFC will immediately fix it automatically.

  • Open command prompt as administrator,
  • First, run the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • Next, run the system file checker utility command SFC /scannow

You don’t need to do anything while the scan is running, when it’s finished, the repair will also be done automatically. All you need to do is wait until the process is complete, later on the CMD screen you will see a description of what errors were detected and whether they have been successfully repaired or not.

Disable fast startup

  • Press Windows key + R, type Powercfg.cpl and hit enter key to open the power options window,
  • On left-hand side Choose what the power button does then Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Untick Turn on fast startup (recommended), Then click Save Changes.
  • Reboot your Windows 10 into the normal mode to see if it succeeds.

Update your device drivers

This problem can also be caused by an outdated, incorrect or corrupt system driver. You should verify that all your devices have the right driver, and update those that don’t.

  • Launch the Device Manager on your PC.
  • Open the Display adapters menu, right-click on your graphics card, and select Update Driver.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to update the drivers.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

The RAM element on your PC stores the essential and temporary configurations and it is worth checking it to see if there are any issues with it.

  • Press the Windows key + R, type mdsched.exe and hit enter key to open the Windows Memory Diagnostic option.
  • Click the Restart now and check for problems option.
  • Your computer will reboot and it will then check and fix any memory issues.

Increase Virtual Memory

Virtual Memory is supposed to act as a savior when the physical memory (RAM) runs out when running resource-intensive programs. And few users reported the Windows 10 laptop hang or freezing issue was fixed by increasing the Virtual Memory.

  • Press Windows Key + R, type sysdm.cpl and Click OK.  
  • Then click Advanced -> Settings -> Advanced -> Changed.
  • Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives and choose Custom Size.
  • Set the Initial Size to 1000 and the Maximum Size to 8192.
  • Then Click OK and Reboot the PC.
