High disk usage windows 10

Windows 10 updates are designed to improve system stability and security. However, sometimes after installing a new update, you may notice slow performance, freezes, delayed response time, and disk usage stays at 100% in Task Manager. Users report, My laptop was perfectly fine yesterday, but today, after performing an update, I’m stuck at 100 percent disk utilization. This issue can be caused by several reasons, including Background apps or processes running on your system, a faulty hard drive or bad sectors, or malware or virus infection, corrupted system files, update bugs, or third-party applications misbehaving after the update. Whatever the reason, here are effective fixes to resolve high disk usage in Windows 10.

Why Disk Usage High After windows 10 Update

Windows 10 100% disk usage after an update means your hard drive is being overworked, potentially by background processes related to the update, which slows down your system. It could be a normal, temporary state as Windows installs the update, but if it persists, it could indicate an ongoing update issue, a bug, or a hardware problem with the hard drive itself.

  • One primary reason is that Windows updates can trigger intensive background processes, such as file replacements and system maintenance, which temporarily max out disk usage and may make the system unresponsive.
  • Hardware-related issues can also contribute. For example, outdated or incompatible drivers, particularly the inbox AHCI driver (StorAHCI.sys), can cause disk controller resets due to firmware bugs, especially on SSDs with MSI (Message Signaled Interrupts) mode enabled, leading to persistent high disk usage.
  • Additionally, corrupted system files, disk errors or bad sectors, malware infections, and a high number of startup applications can all contribute to the problem.
  • In some cases, third-party software like Steam may cause high disk usage due to background update processes getting stuck in a loop.

You may already know that restarting your computer can often resolve all kinds of issues. So before moving forward, we recommend reboot your computer and check if the High disk usage problem is gone.

Disable SysMain (Superfetch) Service

The sysmain (Previously known as superfetch) service helps to pre-load the programs you often use into memory. However, after a Windows Update, SysMain may behave aggressively and cause constant disk reads, leading to 100% disk usage.

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down and look for SysMain.
  3. Right-click SysMain → select Stop.
  4. Again, right-click SysMain → click Properties.
  5. Set Startup type to Disabled → click Apply → OK.
  6. Restart your PC and check Task Manager for disk usage.

Reset Virtual Memory (Paging File)

Virtual memory treats your disk as if it is RAM and uses it to swap out temporary files when it runs out of actual RAM. A corrupted or misconfigured paging file after an update can cause heavy disk operations.

  • Press Windows + R → type sysdm.cpl → Enter.
  • Go to Advanced → under Performance, click Settings.
  • Open the Advanced tab → click Change under Virtual memory.
  • Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size.
  • Select Custom size → Set Initial size and Maximum size (recommended: 1.5x and 3x of RAM).
  • Click Set → OK. Restart your system.

Adjust your virtual memory settings

  • Then press Windows + R, type temp and ok
  • Select all the files in the Temp folder and delete them.
  • Now restart Windows and check the disk usage.

Disable Windows Search Indexing

The Windows Search service constantly indexes files to speed up searches. After an update, the index may rebuild from scratch, causing heavy disk usage. Temporarily disabling it helps.

  • Press Windows + R → type services.msc → Enter.
  • Find Windows Search and double-click it.
  • Click Stop to halt the service.
  • Change Startup type to Disabled.
  • Click Apply → OK. Check disk usage again.

Update SATA AHCI Controller Driver

Incorrect or outdated storage drivers often cause high disk usage. Windows Updates may sometimes install a generic version that performs poorly. Updating to the correct AHCI driver usually fixes this.

  • Right-click Start → Device Manager.
  • Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
  • Right-click Standard SATA AHCI Controller → Properties.
  • Open the Driver tab → click Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  • Restart the PC after the update.

Perform a Clean Boot

A third-party app or service installed on your PC may conflict with the latest Windows update. A clean boot loads only essential Microsoft services, helping you identify the problematic program.

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • Select the Services tab
  • Check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.

Hide all Microsoft services

  • Open the Startup tab → click Open Task Manager.
  • Disable all startup apps.
  • Restart your PC and monitor disk usage.

Disable Fast Startup in Windows

Several users report encountering performance issues after the Windows update due to fast startup (enabled by default). Disabling Fast Startup helps them to fix the issue.

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type powercfg.cpl and click ok to open Power Options.
  2. In the left pane, select Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  4. Under Shutdown settings, uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  5. Click Save Changes. Restart the Windows PC and check if there is no more High Disk usage.

Check Your Disk Health

If your HDD or SSD is failing, Windows may struggle to read/write data, causing persistent 100% disk usage. Running CHKDSK helps identify and fix basic disk errors.

  • Open the command prompt as administrator,
  • Type command chkdsk /f /r c: and press the enter key
  • Press Y when prompted to schedule the disk check on next start, and reboot your PC.
  • Let’s complete the 100% scanning process and note its results.

Run chkdsk command

Install the latest Windows update

Installing the latest updates resolves mysterious problems with your Windows system. Check for and install the latest Windows updates following the steps below.

  1. Press Windows + X and select Settings,
  2. Go to update and security, then Windows Update,
  3. Click the Check for Updates button to check for and install the latest Windows updates.
  4. Restart Windows and check if there is no more 100 Disk usage.

Fix Your StorAHCI.sys Driver

And the ultimate solution: The Windows 10 100% disk usage problem might also be caused by some Advanced Host Controller Interface PCI-Express (AHCI PCIe) models running with the inbox StorAHCI.sys driver due to a firmware bug. Here’s how to determine if this is your problem and fix it:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager,
  • Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers category, and double-click the AHCI controller.
  • Go to the Driver tab and click Driver Details.
  • If you can see storahci.sys is stored in a path of the system32 folder, then you are running the inbox AHCI driver.

Check if running AHCI driver

  • Close the Driver Details window and go to the Details tab.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Device Instance Path.
  • Make note of the path, starting from VEN_.

Note down Device Instance Path

  • Press Windows + R, type Regedit and ok to open the Windows registry editor.
  • Back up the registry database, then navigate the following path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\ <AHCI Controller>\<RandomNumber>\Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties

The <AHCI Controller> that you note down previously starts with VEN_ ).

The <Random Number> differs on different machines.

  • Double-click the MSISupported key and change the value to 0.
  • Restart your computer after the change, then check your computer’s disk usage:
